The real-life toxic gas danger revealed by "Landman"

Hydrogen sulfide, or H2S, leaks like the one depicted on the show “Landman” are extremely dangerous. Exposure to high levels of the gas can be fatal — and chronic, low-level exposure has been linked to neurological and other health problems. Texas has a limit for how much H2S can be in the air, but our 2024 investigation found oil companies leaking the gas near families and schools, with few repercussions. Some state lawmakers and advocates say it’s still a problem.
