Interim Managing Editor

Seeking a newsroom leader to steer our ambitious investigative team for one year.

We are seeking an interim managing editor to lead our editorial team for approximately one year, from summer 2025 to summer 2026. 

This editor is responsible for keeping the newsroom running smoothly and efficiently, supporting our journalists in producing their very best work, while ensuring that the team is working at all times in and in pursuit of our strategic editorial goals. The successful candidate will have 10+ years in an editorial management role, ideally supporting mission-driven journalism, and be comfortable stepping into a key leadership role for a time-limited duration. 

Experience overseeing powerfully reported international corporate accountability investigations and/or health journalism, with meticulous attention to accuracy, is strongly desired. The ideal candidate will also have experience directing editorial collaborations across multiple news outlets, as this approach is core to The Examination’s editorial model. 

Launched in 2023, The Examination is an award-winning nonprofit news organization that investigates global health threats, and those responsible. Our focuses include the tobacco, ultra-processed food and oil/gas industries. We aim to report impactful stories that expose who and what is responsible for health crises that claim tens of millions of lives each, devastating communities and causing huge financial strain to health systems and governments. 

Tasks include:

  • Evaluate story/project proposals with an eye to feasibility, challenges, opportunity cost, support of the mission and impact potential

  • Supervise editors directing major investigations and all major editorial initiatives, leading greenlighting and assigning process 

  • Create and curate the newsroom’s story budget and publication plans across all platforms

  • Carry out editorial workflow day-to-day by overseeing news-gathering, research, data analysis, story editing, headlining/display copy, fact checking, audience and impact design, legal review and other elements to ensure successful, timely roll-outs

  • Build and manage relationships with partnering news organizations, in concert with global partnerships coordinator and other editorial staff

  • Hire and oversee freelancer contributors, ensuring contracts are issued in a timely fashion; that work is completed in a timely manner and that it meets expectations

  • Work with the executive director and director of finance to identify budget priorities, meet grant requirements and ensure the newsroom stays on budget

  • Maintain newsroom cadence by managing key meetings and internal communication to keep editorial staff engaged and on task

  • Ensure also that our (virtual) newsroom is a safe and supportive working environment for all staffers

  • Work closely with the production/audience team to ensure stories and digital assets are visually appealing and engaging and designed to reach relevant audiences

Desired qualifications: 

  • Experience in managing an editorial team or newsroom, particularly in supervising editors

  • Excellent news judgment and experience directing investigations

  • Excellent communication, writing and copy editing skills

  • Experience in and enthusiasm for data-driven journalism and working closely with data journalists and technical specialists

  • Enthusiasm for taking initiative and excellent organization, execution, time management, and prioritization skills 

  • Demonstrated capacity to lead ambitious journalism in a remote work environment

  • Passion for digital storytelling and producing high-impact journalism

  • A sense of adventure, enthusiasm for our mission: The Examination is still very new, and we feel our best work is ahead of us. The opportunity is huge, but the work is challenging.

  • Experience in international news and/or language skills are a plus 

  • Experience in business, health, or science journalism is a plus 

Pay and benefits:

The salary for this one-year temporary employee position is $145,000 - $175,000. The final figure will take into account experience, achievements and location. Please note that this position does not include benefits.
