News Editor

The Examination is seeking a dynamic news editor to join our growing award-winning team. This editor will lead efforts to connect our distinct brand of investigative public health journalism to the news cycle, working across the newsroom to produce engaging and insightful coverage of global health threats with a focus on key industries and topic areas. They will collaborate closely with staff reporters and freelancers to develop timely, quick-turnaround news stories, along with explanatory and analytical content that shares our expertise in timely and creative ways. 

The news editor will also collaborate closely with the audience team to find the best ways to deliver this content in ways that are responsive to reader interests. They will write headlines, edit copy across multiple platforms—including digital, video, and social media— and contribute original  reporting as needed.

A top priority will be steering our newsletter content by  curating, editing and writing, developing a vibrant product that features a strong voice and original reporting, showcasing the best of The Examination’s investigations in new and enterprising ways – i.e. not solely in a promotional capacity. This is a crucial role as we seek to rapidly grow our newsletter audience, and otherwise build connections with the public health sector and other key communities we want to bring into The Examination’s ecosystem. It requires keen news judgment, a familiarity with the global health landscape and an eagerness to engage our readers.

Strong copy editing and line editing skills are absolutely essential, as the news editor will be expected to produce publication-ready copy with minimal additional editing.  

The news editor will report to The Examination’s managing editor. 

Launched in 2023, The Examination is an award-winning nonprofit news organization that investigates global health, working in collaboration with news outlets around the world. 

Tasks will include:

  • Develop, assign and edit short-term news coverage that draws on The Examination’s reporting and beat expertise and support existing or pending investigations – including follow-ups, side-bars and explainers 

  • Steer news reporting assignments through the newsroom workflow and maintain standards by ensuring that fact-checking, legal review, production needs and other editorial expectations are met on a timely basis

  • Steer content for a newsletter product that helps our readers better understand how corporate and governmental actions shape health policy and real-world health outcomes: and connect both to the lives and concerns of real people, in a timely fashion 

  • Work closely with the audience team to deliver the newsletter on a timely basis and experiment with format, design and content to optimize performance. 

  • Work closely with the audience team to line edit and refine platform-specific copy, including social media posts, video transcripts and on-screen text 

  • Continuously monitor and assess the global health landscape to identify important and under-reported stories and angles in our coverage areas

  • Contribute original short-term news and explanatory reporting as needed and support other editorial and strategic newsroom initiatives 

Desired qualifications: 

  • Excellent writing, copy editing and line editing skills are a must, as this person will often serve as the final set of eyes on copy before publication 

  • Excellent news judgment and robust newsroom experience. At least 4 years experience editing copy with a proven track record of publishing across platforms including digital, social media and video 

  • Experience with global health and/or corporate accountability journalism

  • Ability to manage deadlines across time zones and prioritize editing work for multiple ongoing stories

  • Enthusiasm for taking initiative and excellent organization, execution, time management, and prioritization skills 

  • Eager to collaborate with teams across the newsroom and with external reporting partners

  • Experience in investigative or international news and/or language skills are a plus 

  • Familiarity with AP style 

Pay and benefits:

The estimated salary range for this full-time position is $75,000 - $100,000. The final figure will take into account experience, achievements and location.
