We are seeking an audience editor to lead our team in defining, understanding and growing The Examination’s U.S. and international audience, and optimizing the delivery of our content to users across distribution platforms, including on-site, search, newsletter, and social media.
The successful candidate will develop and implement strategies to attract, engage and measure new audiences, particularly those who discover The Examination through search, social and emerging platforms in order for our journalism to have greater impact.
This person will serve as our key newsroom data analyst, and must be comfortable with mining analytics, building new features, experiments and surveys to measure what matters, sharing audience insights with our team to help us make data-informed decisions to expand our reach. The audience editor will report to The Examination’s senior editor of digital storytelling and work in close collaboration with the entire newsroom.
Launched in 2023, The Examination is an award-winning nonprofit news organization that investigates global health threats, working in collaboration with news outlets around the world.
Tasks will include:
Work with the editorial team to identify key baseline goals for our stories, products, and reporting beats, on and off-platform, translating audience and community engagement goals into clear and actionable metrics of success
Work with editors and reporters to optimize performance and workflow to develop engaging content to attract and retain readers on newsletter, social media, and other platforms
Lead newsletter growth and performance strategy by collaborating with editors and reporters to develop and assess performance of features, A/B testing, and sign-up campaigns
Systematically track analytics onsite and off-platform, and with media partners, to develop a deep understanding of The Examination’s current and prospective audience – including behaviors and attributes – interpreting and organizing key data into actionable reports for stakeholders to help shape how we present our reporting both on and off our platforms
Optimize content for search engines by conducting keyword and trend research, recommend search-friendly headlines, display copy and other ensuring metadata aligns with SEO best practices
Execute experiments and surveys to inform decisions on content, formats and posting times, and to improve performance in areas like retention, loyalty, conversions and more
Work closely with our production team, designers, and/or web developers to improve products, make technical recommendations, and produce tools, such as dashboards or automated reports, that support our audience goals
Provide regular training and support for our newsroom on SEO, social media, and newsletter best practices
Keep pace with industry trends and advancements in social media, search, newsletter strategy, data analytics, audience research tools, and emerging platforms
Desired qualifications:
Excellent news judgment and native understanding of different audience platforms, their users, content and strategy
At least 4 years of experience in audience strategy, SEO, or engagement journalism
Demonstrated expertise and experience using audience analytics tools (e.g., Google Analytics, Google Trends, and Google Keyword Planner) and other industry-leading SEO tools to to assess performance, identify content trends, and adjust strategies to discover what resonates with various audiences
Experience using data and analytics to compile and clearly communicate insights to various stakeholders in regular reports
Demonstrated experience in building a subscriber base and measurably growing non-subscriber traffic via search and social platforms
Knowledge of or experience in building newsletter products
Excellent communication, writing and copy editing skills
Enthusiasm for taking initiative and excellent organization, execution, time management, and prioritization skills
Eager to collaborate with teams across the newsroom and with external reporting partners
Passion for digital storytelling and producing high-impact journalism
Experience in investigative or international news and/or language skills are a plus
Pay and benefits:
The estimated salary range for this full-time position is $90,000 - $110,000. The final figure will take into account experience, achievements and location.
